Sharing best practice guidance, news and resources on safe abortion and post-abortion care.
We still have a long way to go in our journey to eliminate unsafe abortion. Almost half of all abortions that will occur this year will be unsafe. It’s predicted that seven million women and girls will suffer devastating injuries and over 22,000 will die.
There are many barriers that hold women back from accessing safe abortion services. Whether it’s a lack of nearby trained practitioners, regulatory restrictions or insufficient clarity over what provision is permitted, barriers to access lead to an estimated 25 million unsafe abortions every year.
As the World Health Organization shared in their safe abortion guidelines, almost every single one of these deaths could be prevented. Through sexuality education, contraception, and the provision of safe, legal, induced abortion and post-abortion care, no woman or girl should die for the right to determine her own future.
Practical guidance on safe abortion and post-abortion care programming can be difficult to access. While pockets of global and country-specific research exist, this evidence is often inaccessible to frontline practitioners, lacks the tangible guidance needed to address programmatic challenges, or remains locked within institutions.
To change this, partners across the sexual and reproductive health sector have come together to launch the SafeAccess Hub – a digital platform sharing best practice guidance on safe abortion and post-abortion care.
Our aim is simple: to open up implementational knowledge from across the sector on what quality safe abortion and post-abortion care looks like. This way, those working on the frontline, providers and policy makers alike, can use this knowledge to expand access to life-saving services in their regions too.
